Yeast infection in dog's ears
Q: Re-curring problem with dk brown/black substance in ears and scratching. i use chlorhexiderm to cleanse ears per vet's instructions. vet prescribes animax ointment. last visit, vet said i had to bring him in next time it happened for a visit. i'm sure they just want the $. constant problem. does petmeds have an comparable ointment? is it possible for the condition to ever go away??? will this cause hearing loss? our dog is a beagle husky mix w/ ears that fold over.
A: You need a vet who will address underyling causes of recurrent ear problems such as inhalent seasonal allergies which can be diagnosed by blood or skin testing, food allergy which is diagnosed by trying low allergy restricted diet like purina ha for a few months, or thyroid problem which is diagnosed by blood test. otherwise will keep coming back. try 1800petmeds ear cleaning solution but need to address these underyling causes

Trying to order the right meds
Q: I am not sure which heartworm meds the vet has given my dog before and would like to start ordering online instead of having to go to the vet which is more expensive!! does it matter if i change the meds?? thank you jennifer
A: You certainly should have some input in the products you use, however no matter which product is selected, your veterinarian will have to write or phone a prescription for you.
Cat behavioral problem
Q: We own a 5 year old short hair cat which we adopted at 1 year from the spca. since then he has been peeing and pooping periodically around the house. we never know where the next place will be, or when... the bathtub, bathroom sink, down the air-conditioning vents and the latest place is poop daily on the carpet in our den. we have 3 cats and 2 liter boxes. he will poop right beside the clean box. all 3 cats are indoor and outdoor, but this one appears to only go in the house lately. we are at a loss. please help!
A: I would add another litter box with a different litter type such as everclean which i have found useful. consider using deterrant in areas she goes like feliaway from 1800petmeds. if nohelp might need meds for behavioral issue from vet

6 month rottweiler mix puppy male
Q: We treated our puppy for worms approximately three weeks ago with a white powdery substance we got from our vet. he seemed fine and then the worms re-occured. i noticed he was draging his butt on the ground in the kennel and had pretty bad diahreha. i treated him again yesterday 6/6 but he still seems about the same bad diahreha, not as energetic as usual any help you could give would be much appreciated. we have another dog 8.5 yr shepherd mix that seems just fine. i've treated her once and she appears syptom free. thanks, jay reese
A: Worms could be secondary or no longer even present. also sometimes if worms there, can get secondary colitis. you might want to ask vet about other diarrhea meds like flagyl. in meantime you could try slippery elm from health food store which soothes digestive tract and putting them on 24 hour fast offering only small amounts of water and pediolyte and then reintroducing bland hamburger and rice diet. also some worming meds can actually worsen diarrhea sometimes
Phenobarbital
Q: My parents who are on a limited income, have two norwegian elkhounds both are on phenobarbital for seizures. can you tell me if petmeds offer something that would be equivilant to the phenobarbital that wouldn't cause any problems switching. i don't see phenobarbital as a medication that is offered. thank you, lisa
A: We currently do not stock phenobarbital, but with an order from your veterinarian, we can make potassium bromide capsules to meet their individual needs. naturally, this is assuming that the veterinarian sees this as a valid alternative to the present therapy.
Biting
Q: I have a 6 year cocker spaniel and he is an alpha dog when around other dogs. he just bit my 16 month old daughter that required 10 stitches. we are living in an extended stay hotel for 3 months until our house is built and he does not have much room to run away from her when she irritates him. we are puzzled on what we can do as a remedy and still keep our family together in one place. are there pills that we can give him over the next 3 months to take the edge off and be a little more lax with kids while in a small place?
A: Tough one as dominance aggression is one that is hard to treat even in better living circumstances. you could call or work with a behavioral veterinarian who specializes in these kind of problems or consider prescription meds like prozac which are occasionally used for this. but needs to be done under care of your vet
Ear oder
Q: I have a year old border collie. her ears smell. what can i do about it? also she is small for a border collie, but she weighs 44#. i think this is to heavy for her frame. what can i do to help her lose some weight. she is not very active. thank you
A: Try low fat or reducing diets like hills r/d or related prescription diets from your vet. for smelly ears consider 1800petmeds ear cleaning solution. if no help see your vet
